Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Turning On Despite Thermostat Set to Cool?

Most AC no-starts trace to power or safety shutoffs. Check the thermostat is set to Cool and replace its batteries. Verify the AC breaker is ON. Make sure the indoor furnace/air handler switch is ON. Empty the drain pan; a tripped float switch can stop the system. Replace a clogged filter. If it still won’t start, a failed capacitor or control issue needs a technician. We offer same-day emergency service in San Antonio. Residential service calls are $79.

  • Quick checks: thermostat batteries; breaker; equipment switch; drain pan/float; air filter.
